The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 28 At this point the revelation ended. With the death of Nebuchadnezzar comes a change in the peoples attitudes, especially their leaders toward Judaism. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so . In Daniels dream the Greek empire and Alexander the great were represented by the four-headed, four-winged leopard. (3) These prophecies must be understood in light of their historical background as provided in Daniel, in the inspired revelation provided by other portions of Scripture, and the cautious use of supplementary information by reliable historical documents or study. We are not to base our thinking and actions on circumstances, but upon the Scriptures. 27 Daniel replied, "No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. May the Spirit of God reveal the meaning of this prophecy to us and produce in us that which God desires to His glory and our good. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. See John F. Walvoord, Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation (Chicago: Moody Press, 1971), p. 149. (19-26) Daniel explains the rise and coming fall of Nebuchadnezzar. It should be remembered that many narratives of scripture are related in a very condensed form, fuller details being added afterwards. I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. A number of lessons from our text have broad application to our thinking and conduct as Christians. The next portion of the statue in Daniel 2 was the chest and arms of silver which represented the Medo-Persian Empire which was even larger than the Babylonian empire. (12) No distinction between the first coming of Christ and the second is made in the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. 5. The ten horns, Daniel is told, represent ten kings who will emerge out of the fourth kingdom. 12 and he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. 76 It is not altogether accurate to refer to chapters 1-6 as historical and 7-12 as prophetic. They surely knew this text to be messianic, but they had always applied it to the Gentiles. All distinctions of race and colour and nationality are stripped away and one apparently human figure represents the whole human race. Joyce C. Baldwin, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1978), p. 150. Part of the dream seemed good, and part of it seemed bad. We know from history that though Persia rose later than Media it soon overshadowed Media in its power. Prophecies are given so that we may look at history, especially events occurring in our own lifetime, from Gods perspective. He gave Daniel a general summary of the dream, These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. Different from the first three, this beast seems uglier, more powerful, and much more hostile toward God and His saints. This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. The three ribs may also represent the kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon which preceded the Medo-Persian empire and then fell to them. In our passage, Daniel asks for and receives an explanation. Some people have a rather irreverent attitude toward prophecy, they approach it as a pastime and they delight in figuring out complex date schemes and drawing detailed diagrams of the future. 1. We have already seen time frame in Revelation referring to half of the seven-year tribulation. Prophecy becomes necessary from time to time to remind men of those things God has planned for the future which He will surely fulfill. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed. From the context, it would seem that Daniels distress is the result of the wickedness and oppression of the world kingdoms which are represented by the beasts, and by the knowledge that the saints will be oppressed and even overcome for a period of time. We should note Daniels distress in chapter 7 before turning to the other prophecies in Daniel, where we will find that prophecy very often produces distress. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. Things are not as they appear to be! Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him. (1) It follows the narrative concerning Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah in the matter of Nebuchadnezzar's golden image (Daniel 3). The first of Daniel's four beasts is "like a lion, and it had the wings of an eagle" ( Daniel 7:4 ). As the wicked prosper in their sin, it seems as though they can continue in sin without any fear of divine judgment (see Psalm 73:1-11; 2 Peter 2:3-4). Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i More, The Net Pastors Journal, Eng. In spite of these kings, the saints of the Highest One will possess the eternal kingdom forever and ever. If Daniel had been shaken by the dark side of his vision, he is reminded in the interpretation of the outcome of these eventsthe establish- ment of Gods eternal kingdom. The third beast is leopard-like, with four wings and four heads, and it is given dominion. Robert L. (Bob)Deffinbaugh graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with his Th.M. These are the things Daniel sees in the vision. (1) Daniel 7 is the last chapter written in Aramaic in the Book of Daniel. Verses 1-14 contain the vision which God gave to Daniel. Our attention should be given to what is clearly and emphatically said. The boastful beast becomes even more aggressive, waging war with the saints and even overpowering them. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). God has revealed in this interpretation what He wants us to know and has kept back that which we need not know. Specifically, the account of The Bad News at Belshazzars Banquet (not a bad title for that lesson) in chapter 5 was given to us so that we could better understand the prophecies of chapters 7 and 8. The horn of the beast that made war against the saints was one of 10 kings who prevailed until the Ancient of days came and judged against him in favor of the saints. Abraham had to believe and behave on the basis of Gods promises, rather than on the basis of his perception. The statue has four parts; there are four beasts. Introduction to Daniel 11 Peter reminds us of Gods patience, but His patience has a determined end. While conservative, evangelical scholars believe the prophecies in Daniel are true, their interpretations differ greatly. International Standard Version so Daniel went to ask Nebuchadnezzar for an appointment to see him , and it was granted him so that he could reveal the meaning to the king. Those who rejected the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of Man, would mourn when they saw Him returning in the clouds: And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory (Matthew 24:30). His final offspring, so to speak, is the little horn which becomes the great blasphemer, whose life and kingdom is suddenly cut off by the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man. Daniel explains that each of these metals represents a kingdom that would rule the world, and the stone is God . Dwight Pentecost writes, The existence of the church in the present Age was nowhere revealed in the Old Testament. The second is bear-like. The coming of the Son of Man is represented as one coming, and not two. I also told you it corresponded to the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 2, but with more detail. This is describing an event that has never happened in the history of the world and is yet future. If you remember from two weeks ago the bear was raised up on one side, this was to indicate that one part of this united kingdom overshadowed the other portion. Before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, four earthly kingdoms will rise and fall. We have talked about several times since starting this series about how studying Bible prophecy should influence you. Prophecy is necessary because Gods thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts were greatly alarming me and my face grew pale, but I kept the matter to myself. (Daniel 7:1528, NASB95)[1], THE FOUR BEASTS REVEALED (Daniel 7:15-18). Upon hearing the details of the dream, Daniel too was troubled (4:19). As the destruction of the last beast and the blaspheming horn came as a complete shock to them, so the Lords coming will catch unbelievers unprepared as well (24:27-39). Daniel was given several prophetic dreams & visions; and in the seventh chapter of his writings, he records his dream of the Four Beasts, and the interpretation thereof given by an angel. This vision demonstrates the succession of kingdoms and is the very framework of all prophesy regarding the violent opposition against the Kingdom of God - waged by the Kingdom of Satan, who is allowed to . 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. History has shown this to be true in the past, and prophecy assures us that it will be true in the future. But in the end, God will judge the wicked and establish His kingdom for His saints. (1) The troubling dream. The Son of Man was also Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:8). The point of this prophecy is not to tell us who future kings will be, but rather what they will be like. In other words, this persecution of the saints will not go on unchecked but will be defined to a definite period of time. (5) Prophecy is not written as hype but revealed to produce the hope of glory and endurance in present tribulation. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief; 5 for you are all sons of light and sons of day. King Nebuchadnezzar died apparently nine years before Belshazzar came to power. Prophecy greatly benefits the Christian because it enables him to see things from the bigger and broader perspectivefrom Gods perspectiveso that when he suffers, he knows it is but a part of the process of getting to glory. Their perception is wrong, for suddenly and without warning their day of destruction will come upon them. And they did! 7 And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. Who are these saints that the angel is speaking of? When He came with His kingdom, they would be sure to recognize Him (24:27). Neither peer opposition nor the king's new law (chapter 6) greatly disturbed Daniel. When the sin and oppression of evil men reaches a predetermined point, God will remove them and establish His promised eternal kingdom. Daniel was an intelligent young Jew living in Jerusalem during the late 600s B.C. The prophecy of Daniel 11 includes amazing details about great empires, political developments and end-time powers that would affect the Jews and all people today. In Daniels dream the Roman empire was represented by such a terrible beast that Daniel could name no animal which fit its description. This description certainly fits the account of Nebuchadnezzars plunge from power and sanity in chapter 4. Those who will reign with Christ are those who have suffered (see Romans 8:17; Philippians 3:10-11; 2 Timothy 2:12). In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. She makes it clear in a rather public fashion that she finds him desirable. God grants this king success and his saints suffering, but only for an appointed time. 21 I kept looking, and that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. What so upset Daniel about the future? In Revelation it is also referred to as 42 months and 1260 days which all work out to 3 years. Remembering this avoids confusion. This designation refers to God the Father in a way that stresses His eternality, dignity, and power. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:89, NASB95)[7] You have a responsibility because you know what the end will bring. In the context of the coming of His kingdom and the suffering and trials which precede it, soberness is a vitally important quality which prophecy promotes: 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. It should give you a caring heart toward the unsaved as you seek to win them to the Lord. Daniel 2:26-49 The blasphemous horn of Daniel 7, which goes so far as to oppose the people of God, is suddenly taken by death, and his kingdom is removed. Old Testament Jews would likely regard the reference to the Son of Man in Daniel 7 as a reference to the Messiah, although they would probably not understand Him to be both divine and human. As Daniel continues to watch, another horn emerges, as three of the other horns are plucked out by the roots to make room for it. The vision comes to Daniel in Belshazzars first year.78 A subsequent and related vision comes to him in this kings third year (see 8:1). Encouraged to do so, it savagely devours. The saints should expect to suffer because of their faith, especially as the last days for the kingdoms of men draw near. They believed that the Messiah would come to establish the kingdom, to bless the Jews and to condemn the Gentiles. In his vision, the statue collapsed and disappeared, because a mysterious stone struck it at its feet. Daniel went at once and obtained royal permission for more time, so that he could tell the king what the dream meant. And yet God said they would. (5) What do the four beasts represent? - As for these four children, God gave them knewledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.Or, as the words might be more accurately rendered, "these lads, the four of them" (Ezekiel 1:8-10).This indicates that somehow they were separated off into a quaternion. When the Lord Jesus came to the earth, He often referred to Himself as the Son of Man, gradually making it clear that He was the Messiah who was God incarnate. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. Wheaton, IL : Victor Books, 1983-c1985, S. 1:1352, [4]LaHaye, Tim and Hindson, Ed., editors, The Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these: The interpretation of the events Daniel witnessed in his vision is given in its most concise form in verses 17 and 18: The four beasts were four kings, who will arise from the earth. Centuries must therefore pass before the prophecies of Daniel are fulfilled. Suffering and glory are a part of one work. (1) The Book of Daniel is a part of the Holy Scriptures, and thus inspired, accurate, and trustworthy. Note these general observations about our passage before we turn to a more detailed study. In the first scene, heavenly winds are employed to whip up the sea from which the four beasts emerges. Chapter 7 - In the first vision Daniel sees the same kingdoms, but this time he sees them as beasts. Rose withdraws the power from her chest, which takes the form of a ruby heart that then cracks as Unity dies peacefully in her sleep. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. Prophecy is revealed to men to change their perspective, to urge them to see things as God sees them rather than as they appear to the human eye. (7) Who is the Ancient of Days? As the saints suffer at the hands of the wicked, it may appear all hope is lost. Consider the birth of a child, remembering that Gods deliverance and salvation is likened to birth. "He's home just in time for #gogglebox we are not on this week as Daniels been away . He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. In the first use of this expression, being a son of man was contrasted with being God: God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Daniel 2:1-23 - The King's Dream (Pastor Nate Wagner) A. Nebuchadnezzar's dream. So it was for our Lord (1 Peter 1:10-12), and so it will be for us. Through the vision of a magnificent, awe-inspiring statue, God reveals the future for Gentile kings and their kingdoms. It devoured and crushed, and trampled down the remainder with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. Daniel 2:1-13 - Nebuchadnezzar's Dream. Je. Rather than publish what he had learned he kept it to himself, until that time that the Holy Spirit guided him to write down and reveal what he had learned to the saints. The entire empire was conquered between 334 and 330 B.C., just four years. The dream vortex dies with her, and Rose awakens with her brother, Jed, sleeping next to her. Hearing this, Nebuchadnezzar affirms that Daniel's god is "the God of gods and Lord of kings and revealer of mysteries". He will persecute and oppress the saints of the Highest One, the angel says that he will wear them down; the idea comes from the concept of wearing out a garment until it is threadbare. When mentioning the little horn that grew up and uprooted three of the first ten horns, Daniel now tells us that this little horn grew until it was larger in appearance then the remaining seven horns. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour much meat! 6 After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. Daniel 2:9-11 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof, Daniel 1:18,19 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar, We are not told in so many words that this extension of time was granted, or that Daniel undertook to show more than the interpretation of the dream. As we shall show later, the content of the prophecy of Daniel 7 is very closely related to the reign of Belshazzar. The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. That night his life and his kingdom came to an end. The beast also was given a mans mind. Then He said to me, Son of man, stand on your feet that I may speak with you! (Ezekiel 2:1). He couldn't sleep. (5) While the process involves wicked kings and nations and the suffering of the saints, the culmination is the establishment of Gods eternal kingdom. We should not spend a disproportionate amount of time and energy trying to fill in the blanks God has left. These will continue to be separate nations in the confederation but will come under the little horns control and authority. (7) No identification is made of the saints as Jews or Gentiles. There seems to be no Jewish nationalistic emphasis here, as there will be later.75. Suffering is an inseparable part of the process which leads to glory. While most of those in this kingdom may not have had a true conversion, at least they tolerated the Jewish faith as the religion of the state. 3 While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. In Daniel's dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. Daniel boiled down his vision to its essence, so we would not fail to understand the message he meant to convey to us. 81 See Ezekiel 29:21 for a similar use of the imagery of making a horn grow to describe a kings promotion to power. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [7]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. Many others may have reluctantly professed or actually adopted the Jewish religion.
